Born in Gillette, Wyoming and raised on a family ranch southwest of town. Graduated from Campbell County High School in 1984. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He is married to Kelly Barlow and has two children: Kate (Deputy Director of Office of Lands and Investments) and Graham (Sheridan contractor).
