Josh Green is the incumbent ninth Governor of Hawaii, serving since December 5, 2022. A physician with over 20 years of clinical experience treating patients on Hawaii's Big Island, Green has dedicated his career to public service and healthcare. He served in the Hawaii State House (2004-2008) and Senate (2008-2018), where he championed legislation on autism insurance coverage (Luke's Law), tobacco age restrictions, and disability rights protections. As Lieutenant Governor (2018-2022), he led Hawaii's COVID-19 response and worked on homelessness solutions. Green is known for his focus on addressing Hawaii's most intractable problems: the housing crisis, homelessness, healthcare access, and climate change. He is eligible to serve a second and final term as governor under Hawaii's two consecutive term limit.
Joshua Booth Green was born February 11, 1970, in Kingston, New York, and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from Swarthmore College (1992) and his M.D. from Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (1997). After completing his residency in Family Medicine at UPMC Shadyside (2000), he joined the National Health Service Corps and was stationed in Hawaii as a physician for the Big Island's rural Ka'ū district. He practiced family medicine and emergency room medicine, often being the only physician in rural areas, treating over 8,000 patients including 4,000+ Native Hawaiians. He was awarded Physician of the Year by the Hawaii Medical Association twice (2009 and 2022). Green is married to Jaime Kanani Green and has two children, Maia and Sam. He is a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
