After college, he worked as Deputy Chief of Staff for the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture under Congressman Larry Combest, serving during Combest's tenure as committee chairman. He helped craft the 2002 Farm Bill and Crop Insurance Reform Act of 2000. He later returned to Lubbock and co-founded the law firm Combest, Sell and Associates with Combest, which focuses on agriculture, environmental issues, and trade policy. Sell has served as Board Chairman of Breedlove Foods, focusing on international hunger relief. He is married to Kyla, his college sweetheart, and they have four children: Noah (oldest, U.S. Army officer), Luke, Daniel, and Naomi (three youngest in college). The family is active in their church and community, mentoring students at Texas Tech's Davis College of Agriculture.
