Summary

Sonia Canchola is running as an Independent candidate for the general election on November 3, 2026. She did not participate in either the Democratic or Republican primary, which allowed her to file as an independent candidate. Limited information about her background, platform, and campaign activities is publicly available.

Yolanda R. Prince is a project manager and experienced public servant from East Texas. She earned a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and a graduate degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Prince has worked in education, nonprofit organizations, and government. She decided to run for Congress after local Democrats were unable to field a candidate against Moran in 2024. Prince has been deeply involved in Democratic politics in East Texas, serving as a precinct chair, election judge, and president of the Democratic Club of Smith County for about a decade. In the March 2026 Democratic primary, Prince received 44% of the vote, leading the field. She advanced to the May 26, 2026 runoff against Dax Alexander.

Dax Alexander is a software developer and East Texas native from Martins Mill, Texas. He was born at the former Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler and raised on a dairy farm. Alexander is a self-described 'proud progressive' who believes Texas can become a blue state. He emphasizes grassroots campaign funding through small-dollar donations and local volunteers. In the March 2026 Democratic primary, Alexander received 22% of the vote, finishing second to Yolanda Prince (44%). He advanced to the May 26 runoff election to determine the Democratic nominee.

Nathaniel Quentin Moran was born September 23, 1974, in Arizona and grew up in Smith County, Texas. He attended West Point for two years and graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.A. in Russian, an M.B.A., and a J.D. Moran began his career as an attorney and partner at Ramey & Flock, P.C. He served on the Tyler City Council from 2005-2009 and as Smith County Judge from 2016-2022. He was elected to Congress in 2022, representing Texas' 1st Congressional District since January 3, 2023. He is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China. Moran resides in Whitehouse with his wife Kyna and their four children.
