Washington U.S. Senator (Class 3) — Patty Murray
Patricia Lynn Murray (born October 11, 1950) is Washington's senior U.S. Senator and a six-term Democrat first elected in 1992 as a grassroots 'mom in tennis shoes' candidate. She served as the first female president pro tempore of the Senate (2023-2025) and is currently vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Lower costs for families through middle-class tax cuts and expanded child tax credit
Status: completed
In 2021, Murray helped secure the expanded Child Tax Credit through the American Rescue Plan, which the campaign touted as 'one of the largest middle-class tax cuts in history.' It cut child poverty nearly in half. However, the tax credit was temporary and expired after 2025, and Murray's promise to make it permanent has not been achieved.
Lower prescription drug costs for seniors and all Americans
Status: completed
Murray sponsored and helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act (2022), which allows Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug costs, caps insulin at $35/month for Medicare recipients, and caps out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 annually. This directly fulfilled her campaign promise.
Invest in American manufacturing and strengthen supply chains via Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
Status: completed
Murray helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (2021) and negotiated the CHIPS Act. She secured provisions in infrastructure legislation to protect workers and provide good wages and benefits. As she stated, the law creates 'good-paying jobs in every part of Washington state.'
Protect reproductive rights and codify Roe v. Wade at federal level
Status: ongoing
Murray made reproductive rights a centerpiece of her 2022 campaign, stating 'I will pass legislation to codify Roe v. Wade.' She has consistently voted for pro-choice legislation and spoken out against restrictions. However, the Women's Health Protection Act to codify Roe has not passed the Republican-controlled Senate. Murray continues to fight for reproductive rights through various Senate actions.
Protect democracy and voting rights; opposed Trump's actions on January 6
Status: ongoing
Murray voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment (for inciting January 6 violence) and has advocated for the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and Freedom to Vote Act to protect voting access and prevent gerrymandering. She stated she would 'pass legislation to protect every American's right to vote,' but these bills have not passed the Republican Senate.
